Applied Yoga: Applied Yoga Low Back Therapy

Course program

Applied Yoga Low Back Therapy is a self-paced online course from Applied Yoga that teaches how to assess and correct low back pain and dysfunction through targeted yoga and movement-based interventions. It blends classical yoga with the biomechanical and assessment principles Jory Serota draws from physical therapy and NeuroKinetic Therapy.

This course is for yoga teachers who want tools to help students with chronic low back pain, yoga and movement students who want to deepen their understanding of spinal mechanics, and individuals dealing with low back pain who want guided self-care. No prior credential is required; some familiarity with basic yoga postures helps but is not required.

The curriculum is built around the most common drivers of low back pain: hyper-lordosis, pelvic misalignment, psoas and core imbalance, neurological weakness in the deep stabilizers, and dysfunctional breathing patterns. Across four modules and a Welcome section, you learn to identify these patterns and apply specific corrective sequences.

Module one covers breath work, sacral assessment, and strengthening and mobilizing the spine through Salabhasana variations, table pose work, lumbar mobilization, sphinx pose assessment, and Dandasana for L4-5/S1. Module two focuses on the abdominals and psoas — TVA activation, eccentric and concentric psoas strengthening, trigger point release, and Parsvakonasana for the psoas and QL. Module three teaches low back cooling techniques including Supta Padangusthasana, Pavana Muktasana, Janusirsasana, supine spinal twists with functional breath, and myofascial release with a ball. The course closes with two master sequences you can use for yourself or with students.

The course is taught by Jory Serota, founder of Applied Yoga Seminars and a certified NeuroKinetic Therapy Instructor with more than 20 years of experience in kinesiology. Serota has trained thousands of yoga teachers and bodyworkers and is known for translating complex biomechanical material into practical, accessible instruction.

The course is delivered entirely online in a self-paced video format, with an Applied Yoga eBook included. Students work through the Welcome section, three teaching modules, and the master sequences at their own pace. There are no required live sessions, scheduled classes, or assessments — completion is a function of working through the content.

Jory offers a depth of knowledge that can only come from direct experience and dedicated self-study. Without fail, every time I practice with him I walk away with new techniques to awaken my body and steady the mind. He naturally weaves together the integrity of all eight limbs of yoga and leads his classes with humor, focus and precision. Jory represents a powerful link in a chain of teachers going back centuries, and is himself, an embodiment of Yoga.
