Functional Movement Injury Prevention Strength Development

Applied Yoga: Hip Mobility

Course program

Applied Yoga Hip Mobility by Jory Serota teaches yoga teachers and movement professionals how to assess and treat the hip joint using an approach that blends classical yoga asana with functional movement, physical therapy, and kinesiology. The program offers a practical framework for working with limited range of motion, sciatica, and common hip dysfunctions.

This course is for yoga teachers, advanced practitioners, personal trainers, bodyworkers, and movement professionals who work with students experiencing limited hip mobility or hip-related pain. Some prior yoga or movement experience is expected, and an existing teaching credential is recommended for CE credits. It also suits anyone wanting to learn assessment-based techniques for hip health beyond passive stretching.

The curriculum frames the hip as a ball-and-socket joint that requires hydration, mobilization, and strength training rather than passive opening alone. Students learn why too much passive yoga can contribute to injury, and how to use asana as both an assessment tool and a treatment method.

The Hip Mobility section covers ten core lessons including supine hip circles, closing-angle pain and the block lunge, supta padangusthasana 1-3 in passive and active variations, hip distraction work, abduction with fire hydrants and goddess pose, hip circles and joint articulation from table, 90:90 internal and external rotation, prone internal rotation with isometric introduction, and ardha chandrasana for abductor strength. Two bonus lessons cover external rotation from simple crossed legs and external rotation with a block. An introductory module on the Applied Yoga methodology frames the work.

Key themes include assessing available ranges of motion at the hip, identifying and treating motor control issues, using isometrics for muscular activation, strengthening the abductors, opening the groins, and practical techniques for sciatica, hip pinch, and impingements. Functional motor control is taught as the core component of muscular health.

The course is taught by Jory Serota, founder of Applied Yoga Seminars. Serota has over 20 years of experience in kinesiology and therapeutic movement and is a certified NeuroKinetic Therapy Instructor. He has trained thousands of yoga teachers and bodyworkers in his method.

The course is delivered entirely online in a self-paced video format with lifetime access across any device. Two modules cover an introduction to the Applied Yoga methodology and the hip mobility content, organized into thirteen video lessons. Students work through the material on their own schedule. A 3-day refund window is offered if the material isn’t a fit.

Jory offers a depth of knowledge that can only come from direct experience and dedicated self-study. Without fail, every time I practice with him I walk away with new techniques to awaken my body and steady the mind. He naturally weaves together the integrity of all eight limbs of yoga and leads his classes with humor, focus and precision. Jory represents a powerful link in a chain of teachers going back centuries, and is himself, an embodiment of Yoga.
