Astrology University: Understanding Complex Aspect Patterns

Course program

Understanding Complex Aspect Patterns is an online astrology course from Astrology University taught by Karen Hamaker-Zondag and Tony Howard. The four-week program focuses on identifying and interpreting the major multi-planet patterns that shape a birth chart: the t-square, yod, grand trine, grand cross, kite, and talent triangle, along with whole-chart patterns like the bucket, bundle, and seesaw.

This course is built for students who already understand the basics of astrological aspects and want to read more deeply into complex configurations. It suits practising or aspiring astrologers who interpret charts for themselves, clients, or friends, and anyone enrolled in the school’s four-year diploma program — the course counts toward that diploma but no prior credential is required to enroll.

The curriculum spans four weekly units. Week 1 covers t-squares and grand crosses — how these high-tension configurations describe ongoing internal pressure and the work involved in integrating them. Week 2 focuses on the yod, the “finger of God” pattern formed by two quincunxes and a sextile. Week 3 explores the grand trine, kite, and talent triangle — the flowing patterns of natural gift and the more challenging mixed configurations they can form. Week 4 introduces whole-chart patterns, including the bucket, bundle, and seesaw shapes that Marc Edmund Jones first described, which read the chart as a single gestalt rather than a sum of aspects.

The course teaches both how to recognise these patterns and how to discuss them with clients or friends, framing each configuration in terms of the unique mix of elements and modes it contains. Reading assignments draw on Bruno Huber’s Aspect Pattern Astrology, Wanda Sellar’s Chart Shapes, and Karen Hamaker-Zondag’s The Yod Book.

The course is co-taught by Karen Hamaker-Zondag, a Dutch psychological astrologer who founded the Stichting Achernar astrology school in 1980 and authored The Yod Book, Foundations of Personality, and other titles, and Tony Howard, the Director and Faculty Astrologer at Astrology University, who leads the school’s four-year diploma program.

The course is fully self-paced. Pre-recorded video lessons are available for instant access along with audio files, handouts, and weekly reading assignments. Students can ask questions and discuss material in a moderated discussion area at any time. The program also includes four recorded Q&A sessions. Students enrolling on the audit track move through the same materials independently; the diploma track adds personal feedback on homework and an exam review.
