Buteyko Clinic International: Buteyko Breathing for Asthma & Respiratory Health

Course program

Buteyko Breathing for Asthma & Respiratory Health is a self-paced online course from Buteyko Clinic International, the global organisation that has taught the Buteyko Method since 2002. The program introduces practical breathing techniques developed by Russian doctor Konstantin Buteyko, focused on helping people with asthma and other respiratory conditions manage symptoms through changes in everyday breathing patterns.

This course is open to anyone interested in using breathing exercises to manage asthma, wheezing, breathlessness, or other respiratory symptoms — no prior experience required. It suits adults looking to reduce reliance on medication and improve daily breathing, as well as anyone curious about the Buteyko Method as a complement to existing medical care.

The course centres on switching from mouth to nasal breathing and learning specific exercises designed to normalise breathing volume — the foundational ideas of the Buteyko Method. Students work through 24 recorded video chapters that explain the technique and demonstrate how to apply it in everyday life.

Alongside the videos, a recommended daily program of breathing exercises guides students through consistent practice aimed at reducing wheezing, breathlessness, and coughing. The curriculum draws on methods that have been clinically studied for their effects on breathing patterns and respiratory function.

Supporting materials include a 20-page instructional manual and guided audio recordings to use during home practice, so the techniques can be revisited and refined over time. The focus throughout is practical: small, repeatable changes to how you breathe during the day, intended to help students live a more active and comfortable life with better respiratory control.

The course is led by Patrick McKeown, a Buteyko expert and author who has worked with people on breathing, sleep, and anxiety since 2002. He completed clinical training under Professor Konstantin Buteyko and is the author of ten books, including The Oxygen Advantage. He is a TEDx speaker and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Biology.

The format is fully self-paced. Students access 24 pre-recorded video chapters online and follow a recommended daily program of breathing exercises at home. A 20-page instructional manual and guided audio recordings support practice between video lessons. There are no live sessions or fixed schedule — lifetime access is included, so the material can be revisited as needed.
