Buteyko Clinic International: Buteyko Breathing for Asthma & Respiratory Health

Course program

Buteyko Breathing for Asthma & Respiratory Health by Buteyko Clinic International is a self-paced online course built around the Buteyko Method, a clinically studied approach to functional breathing developed by Russian doctor Konstantin Buteyko. It teaches practical techniques for managing asthma, wheezing, breathlessness, and related respiratory symptoms through daily breathing practice.

This course is for adults who want to understand and manage asthma or other respiratory conditions through breathing work, as well as anyone looking to reduce reliance on medication where appropriate. No prior experience with breathwork is required.

– Core Buteyko principles: switching from mouth to nasal breathing, slowing the breath, and normalising breathing volume
– Rationale and application of each technique in daily life
– Daily program of breathing exercises to reduce symptoms like wheezing, breathlessness, and coughing
– Practical, repeatable exercises to build a consistent daily breathing habit
– How to use the instructional manual and guided audio recordings for at-home practice

The course is led by Patrick McKeown, a Buteyko breathing expert who completed his clinical training directly under Professor Konstantin Buteyko and has been teaching the method since 2002. Patrick is the author of ten books on breathing, including The Oxygen Advantage, a TEDx speaker, and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Biology. He leads Buteyko Clinic International, which is positioned as the largest Buteyko training organisation worldwide.

The course is fully self-paced and delivered online with lifetime access. Students progress through 24 pre-recorded video chapters alongside the manual and guided audio recordings, with no live sessions, scheduled cohorts, or assessments. The format is designed to fit around daily life so the breathing exercises can be practised consistently over time.

I can say that the vast majority of all of my patients have received great benefit with their nasal symptoms following instruction at the workshops.

Your approach made a significant difference to my breathing during sports performance and throughout my daily life. It is simple, makes sense and should be taught to all.

This is one of the best courses I have attended, and offered so much more beyond the book in terms of information and practical application. Patrick breaks down the physiology of breathing, and how it affects performance, health, and physical well being.

I didn’t realise the detrimental effect of breathing through the mouth during rest and the importance of nasal breathing. Implementing the exercises resulted in improved health and in turn better sports performance.

I did the Buteyko course with you in Kilkenny and Dublin at least 10 years ago and want to let you know how it changed everything! No more bronchitis, asthma, sinusitis, colds. Brilliant! I've been using both Feldenkrais, Alexander technique and Buteyko in all my vocal and saxophone teaching for a while now.
