Buteyko Clinic International: Online Certification in Buteyko Breathing Method

Course program

The Online Certification in Buteyko Breathing Method (CertBBM) by Buteyko Clinic International trains practitioners to teach the Buteyko Method, a clinical approach to functional breathing developed by Russian doctor Konstantin Buteyko. Led by Patrick McKeown, the program prepares graduates to work with clients on breathing disorders across respiratory, sleep, and mental health domains.

The certification is open to anyone interested in becoming a certified Buteyko Breathing Instructor — no prior credentials or breathwork experience are required to enroll. It suits health and wellness professionals, yoga and breathwork teachers, and motivated practitioners who want to help adults and children improve their breathing as part of a clinical, coaching, or teaching practice.

The training is structured around seven live Zoom classes that explore the Buteyko Method across the populations it serves. You’ll learn to evaluate breathing patterns in children and adults, measure the Control Pause, and teach the core Buteyko exercises: Nose Decongesting, Breathing Recovery, Breathe Light, Breathe Slow, Breathe Low, and the Maximum Pause.

The curriculum then applies those exercises across condition-specific protocols. For respiratory health, it covers asthma, lung disorders, and long COVID, including Chronic Hyperventilation Syndrome and the Buteyko clinical trials for asthma. For sleep, it covers insomnia, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea, and the relationship between breathing patterns and sleep quality. For mental health, it covers panic disorder, anxiety, and high stress, including protocols for clients with a poor relationship to their breathing. A dedicated module addresses children and teenagers, including the impact of oral breathing on sleep, academic performance, and craniofacial development.

The program is led by Patrick McKeown (MA, FRSB), a leading international authority on the Buteyko Method. Educated at Trinity College Dublin, he completed his clinical training in Russia and was accredited in 2002 by the method’s founder, Dr. Konstantin Buteyko. He is the author of eleven books published in 16 languages, including The Oxygen Advantage and The Breathing Cure, and has trained thousands of healthcare professionals in over 50 countries.

The format is hybrid. After registering, students get instant access to the online training portal — pre-recorded lectures, videos, the exam, and a comprehensive training manual with exercise scripts and protocols. Seven two-hour live Zoom classes with Patrick run three times a year (recorded and available afterwards in the portal). Lifetime access is included, along with monthly live meetings with Patrick and other Buteyko instructors and dedicated mentorship from a team member who answers queries throughout the certification path.
