Buteyko Clinic International: Online Certification in Psychophysiological Breath Training

Course program

Online Certification in Psychophysiological Breath Training (CertPBT) is a Buteyko Clinic International programme co-developed by Patrick McKeown and Alessandro Romagnoli. It equips mental health professionals with an evidence-based framework for understanding the relationship between breathing, mind, and body, and for using functional breathing as a clinical tool within their existing therapeutic practice.

This certification is designed for psychologists, psychotherapists, counsellors, mental health nurses, social workers, and other qualified health practitioners seeking to broaden their therapeutic practice through evidence-based breath training. It is not a beginner programme. Students are expected to already hold a clinical credential and to integrate the techniques into established work with anxiety, trauma, stress, depression, and sleep disorders.

The curriculum spans eight sections. The opening sections cover the scientific foundations of psychophysiological breath training, dysfunctional breathing and its impact on mental health, and the relationship between emotions, environment, and respiration. Students explore the Psycho-Neuro-Endocrine-Immunology (PNEI) model linking breath, body, and mind.

Middle sections focus on the fundamentals of functional breathing, the role of CO2 and pH regulation, the Buteyko Method, interoception, breath control, and nervous system balance. Later sections apply this material to clinical practice: targeted breathing sequences for stress, anxiety, panic, low mood, trauma, and PTSD; protocols for insomnia, snoring, and sleep apnea; and functional breathing assessment tools with practical demonstrations. The final section addresses teaching progression, integration of breath training into psychotherapy and counselling, and professional ethics, safety, and client care.

The programme is led by Patrick McKeown, a leading international authority on the Buteyko Method who trained clinically under Dr. Konstantin Buteyko and is the author of eleven books on breathing. He is joined by Alessandro Romagnoli, a psychotherapist and psychologist who co-developed the programme and brings clinical depth in cognitive and neuropsychological psychotherapy alongside Master Instructor credentials in the Buteyko Clinic Method and Oxygen Advantage.

The format is hybrid. Students learn at their own pace through a structured online portal of lectures, videos, and downloadable resources, with lifetime access and the ability to revisit material at any time. This is paired with three live two-hour Zoom sessions with Patrick McKeown each year for practice, Q&A, and peer discussion, plus monthly live meetings with Patrick and other Buteyko instructors. Required case studies and assessments are completed to achieve certification.
