Costa Yoga School: Mindful Chair Yoga Teacher Training

Course program

Mindful Chair Yoga Teacher Training is a specialty certification from Costa Yoga, created and taught by founder Mandy Lawson. The self-paced program prepares existing yoga teachers to lead safe, accessible chair-based classes for populations who cannot practice on a mat — from seniors and office workers to wheelchair users and students recovering from injury.

This training is for yoga teachers who want to expand their offerings to reach students of any ability, especially those working with seniors, school groups, desk-bound adults, or students managing injury, disability, or chronic illness. It assumes participants already have a foundational teaching background.

The curriculum covers what chair yoga is, necessary props, safety considerations, and foundational context including the Eight Limbs of Yoga, mindfulness principles, equity in yoga, scope of practice, and anatomy for seated practice. You’ll learn to structure a full chair yoga class: class outline, creating a safe space, setting themes and intentions, and optional opening Om. Practices include pranayama, meditation, yoga for the face and eyes, self-massage, warm-ups, sun salutations, upper- and lower-body postures adapted to the chair, and closing practices like a final wish and optional chanting. The training also provides four full practice video libraries: Energy and Focus, Rest and Relaxation, Flexibility and Mobility, and Strength and Stability.

The program is taught by Mandy Lawson, founder of Costa Yoga School and an E-RYT 500, RYCT, and YACEP-designated teacher with more than nine years of yoga teaching experience and over twenty years in the health and fitness industry. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and is a certified Hypnotherapist.

The course is fully self-paced and pre-recorded. You can enroll at any time, progress at your own speed, and return to the material whenever you want — access is for life. Payment plans are available at checkout.

Mandy has a warm and welcoming personality and made herself accessible throughout the training, but the best part was how well she was able to break down the material so anyone could understand it. I loved the balance between yogic philosophy and asana styles while hitting home the importance of anatomy. Thanks to Mandy I feel confident I can design yoga classes around my students' needs. Whether you're just starting your yoga journey or looking to refresh your skills, I highly recommend training with Mandy.

In a moment of time and life that was the most challenging of all, I was fortunate enough to be able to take Costa Yoga's 300-hour online training. During the pandemic I dove into this deeper study of yoga philosophy and way of life that I never really knew existed. I had always thought of yoga just as movement and stretching, but have come to realize just how much more it is. This training is not only worth the time and the financial investment, but it truly helps bring awareness to how full circle a yoga practice is to the meaning and quality of life.
