ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association): Bodybuilding Certification

Course program

The Bodybuilding Certification by ISSA is a self-paced specialist program for fitness professionals who want to coach clients toward physique goals. It combines hypertrophy training, aerobic programming, nutrition, and supplementation strategy into a single certification under the ISSA brand.

This course is open to anyone interested in earning a bodybuilding specialist credential — no prior certification is required to enroll. It is designed primarily for fitness professionals who want to specialize in physique coaching, but ISSA notes the material also benefits trainers working with everyday clients pursuing specific muscle and body composition goals.

The curriculum covers the principles of muscle anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics as they apply to program design. Students study resistance training strategies and modalities that optimize muscle hypertrophy and strength, and analyze the pros and cons of various aerobic strategies for bodybuilders.

Nutritional content addresses the principles of basic nutrition and supplementation for athletic performance, as well as how ergogenic aids can be used to improve outcomes and the health risks they present. The course also covers the factors that contribute to muscle hypertrophy, the causes of overtraining and injury, and exercises intended to increase strength and hypertrophy. A dedicated unit on sports psychology covers the mental preparedness strategies that support optimal bodybuilding performance.

The course textbook was authored by Josh Bryant. ISSA students also have access to unlimited educational support from on-staff professors and a network of Master Trainers within the ISSA community who provide guidance through the online student forum.

The program is fully self-paced and delivered online. Students enroll for instant access and progress through the textbook at their own speed, taking chapter quizzes along the way. ISSA provides an online study guide, an exercise lab with over 250 animated exercises, and unlimited educational support. The certification is earned by passing an open-book, untimed final exam, with one no-cost retest if needed.
