ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association): Certified Indoor Cycling Instructor

Course program

The Certified Indoor Cycling Instructor course by ISSA is an online certification that prepares fitness enthusiasts and existing trainers to lead indoor cycling classes. The curriculum blends human anatomy, energy systems, and cycling-specific nutrition with class design and riding technique, so graduates can deliver structured, results-driven group sessions rather than relying on enthusiasm alone.

This course is open to both fitness fans and existing trainers — no prior certification is required to enroll. It suits people who want to teach indoor cycling classes at a gym, studio, or fitness facility, as well as personal trainers and group fitness instructors looking to add cycling as a specialization to their existing toolkit.

The curriculum is built around five core areas. Students study the foundations of human anatomy and movement, examining how the body responds to cycling, and learn about energy systems and performance so they can match intensity to client goals. A dedicated section covers cycling-specific nutrition demands, including pre-workout fueling for riders.

The practical side focuses on class design, equipment, and riding techniques: bike setup and safety, proper riding mechanics, sequencing a class, and using equipment and gear effectively. Students also work through corrective exercises for cyclists and explore how to grow their skills as an instructor — how to build an audience, motivate clients, and retain students. The course is delivered through an online textbook, a library of 30 instructional videos, structured study, and unlimited education support.

The format is fully self-paced and online. Students access an online course textbook alongside a library of 30 instructional videos, work through guided and structured study, and take chapter quizzes to track progress. Unlimited education support is available throughout the program. The course concludes with an open-book, untimed final exam taken from anywhere, with one free retake included.
