ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association): Certified Personal Trainer

Course program

The Certified Personal Trainer program by ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association) is a professional training certification that prepares graduates to work as personal trainers in commercial gyms, private studios, and independent practice. It combines foundational exercise science with applied programming, behavior change, and business skills, and offers the option of an NCCA-accredited credential through the NCCPT exam.

Career changers, fitness enthusiasts, and self-directed learners who want to become certified personal trainers, including veterans transitioning into fitness careers. No prior credential is required.

The curriculum covers anatomy, physiology, and the exercise science fundamentals that underpin safe, effective training. Students learn to design customized, goal-based programs for a wide range of clients and to apply behavior change and motivation strategies that help people stick with their training.

Beyond programming, the course addresses injury prevention and corrective techniques, with supporting materials including a digital textbook, more than 250 exercise 3D animations, an exercise video library, a study workbook, and practice quizzes. Students also gain the practical tools used in day-to-day practice, from ready-to-use client materials to a professional website.

The program concludes with applied business and marketing content so new trainers can build a sustainable client base, and an ongoing career community for support after certification.

The format is hybrid. Core content is delivered through 100% online self-paced learning, and the program includes weekly live Zoom sessions with ISSA educators for discussion and Q&A. Students can complete the program in as little as three months, with flexibility to move faster or slower, and the option to pay in full or through monthly installments.
