ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association): Certified Pilates Instructor

Course program

The Certified Pilates Instructor course from ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association) prepares fitness professionals to teach mat and equipment-based Pilates classes. Built on Pilates principles of controlled, breath-led movement, the program covers anatomy, alignment, cueing, and class design so graduates can lead safe, effective sessions for clients at any fitness level.

The course is designed for new and current fitness professionals who want to add a Pilates specialization to their offering, as well as career changers entering the fitness industry. No prior credential is required to enroll. It suits anyone who wants to lead group or one-on-one Pilates sessions and gain a recognized instructor credential they can take into gyms, studios, or independent practice.

The curriculum covers Pilates history, philosophy, and the core principles of controlled movement. Students study anatomy, alignment, and breathing techniques, then move into class design, sequencing, and cueing strategies for safe and effective sessions.

The program includes core Pilates exercises alongside more advanced mat and equipment-based work, with attention to how movements support strength, flexibility, balance, and posture. Students learn to assess client form, modify exercises for different populations and injuries, and program full workout plans that match individual goals and movement limitations. A 3D exercise animation library with over 250 visual references supports practical skill-building.

Beyond the physical practice, the course covers professional teaching and communication skills, plus ready-to-use forms for client assessments and consent. Graduates leave with the knowledge to deliver one-on-one sessions, group classes, and virtual training as a working Pilates Instructor.

The format is fully self-paced and 100 percent online. Students study on their own schedule across any device, working through video and audio lessons, a searchable digital textbook, and hands-on application exercises. Chapter quizzes reinforce learning along the way. The certification is earned through an open-book, open-note online final exam taken at home. A dedicated student support team is available from enrollment through certification.
