Functional Movement Injury Prevention Physical Conditioning Strength Development

ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association): Powerlifting Instructor

Course program

The Powerlifting Instructor certification by the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) trains fitness professionals to coach clients in the three core powerlifting movements — squat, bench press, and deadlift. Graduates earn the Advanced Powerlifting Specialist credential and gain a focused expansion to their personal training skill set.

This course is open to anyone interested in coaching strength — no prior credential is required to enroll. It is geared toward personal trainers and coaches who want to diversify their skill set with a powerlifting specialization, as well as fitness enthusiasts who want a structured introduction to safely teaching squat, bench, and deadlift technique to clients of any age.

The curriculum is built around four core areas. The fundamentals section covers the basic movements of the human body and how to safely and effectively teach powerlifting form. The evaluation and assessment section trains you to assess a client’s current physical foundation and identify movement issues that could lead to injury.

The teaching and technique section focuses on how to demonstrate and cue the squat, bench press, and deadlift correctly, including how to communicate technique to clients of different ability levels. The individualized program design section teaches you to build tailored powerlifting programs around each client’s starting point, needs, and strength goals. Throughout the course, materials emphasize how the body moves and reacts under load, the role of the three core lifts in building foundational strength, and how to progress clients toward their goals while reducing injury risk.

The program is fully self-paced and delivered online. After enrolling, you receive instant access to the online textbook, instructional videos, and downloadable course materials, and study at your own pace from anywhere. Progress is tracked through chapter quizzes built into each section of the curriculum. The course is completed by passing an open-book, untimed final exam taken from home, with unlimited educational support available throughout.
