Loka Yoga School: Yoga Mechanics Training

Course program

The Online Yoga Mechanics Training by Loka Yoga School is a 20-hour self-paced course focused on the biomechanics of yoga and the science of stretching. It blends functional movement, yoga therapy principles, and pain-science concepts to help teachers and practitioners understand how the body actually works in asana — and how to teach more effectively as a result.

This course is built for yoga teachers and committed practitioners who want a deeper, more anatomical understanding of yoga. No previous yoga teaching certification is required to enroll, but the framing is explicitly for those who already teach or have an established practice and want to upgrade how they think about stretching, mobility, and injury prevention. It is also relevant for students working with athletes, older adults, or people recovering from injury.

The training covers the biomechanics of the spine and core, hips and knees, and shoulders, with mobility sequences and isometric drills for each region. It examines the science and physiology of stretching, distinguishing tension from compression, stressing from stretching, and pain from acceptable discomfort. The curriculum busts common yoga myths and corrects miscued instructions students often hear in studio classes.

Alongside the science, the course teaches sequencing principles, cues and instruction, and dynamic movement patterns that can be incorporated into existing yoga classes. Workshops show the techniques in practice, and a full-length movement class lets students experience the methodology firsthand. Topics extend to functional range conditioning and tools used with elite athletes, fitness professionals, people recovering from injury, and older students, so graduates can adapt sequences for a much wider range of bodies and abilities.

The course is led by Stella Attwood, a movement specialist who has worked professionally in her field for over 12 years. Her background spans yoga, Pilates, functional range conditioning, yoga therapy, the Garuda method, prenatal and post-natal exercise, Barre and Aerial fitness, personal training, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, pain science, and evidence-based movement and rehabilitation.

The format is fully self-paced and online, with no live sessions required. Students get access to Loka Yoga School’s Yoga Mechanics training portal, where all modules, workbooks, photos, videos, and tutorials live. Content includes step-by-step technique breakdowns, workshops, and full-length classes. Students progress at their own speed and the school states there are no assessments to complete.

I recently completed this breathwork course, and I genuinely found it to be a very valuable and informative experience. The content was presented in a clear, structured, and easy-to-follow way, which made even more complex concepts feel approachable and grounded. I appreciated how the course balanced both theory and practical application, allowing me to not only understand why breathwork works, but also how to use it effectively and safely.

Bang for your buck! This course is so rich in knowledge and practical learning techniques. I will be learning over and over as I practice these pranayamas in a deeper spiritual way. Yann and Taryn are very clear and compassionate in their sharing of the lessons.

Having done multiple online courses, this one stood out for its depth and practicality. The teaching section was phenomenal. I loved the anatomy, the guided sessions, and how I now truly understand the breath.

Brilliant course! The course is well structured into bite size chunks to navigate at your own pace. The anatomy component is quite detailed, even though considered relatively basic, and it was a great addition to the course, to offer the physiological and scientific aspect of breathwork efficacy. Both Taryn and Yann are knowledgeable instructors.
