Meditation University: Meditation Fundamentals

Course program

Meditation Fundamentals by Meditation University is a short self-paced introduction to meditation, led by Kevin Ellerton, founder of Meditation Magazine and Meditation University. The course packs four core practices into about ninety minutes of material, designed to take a complete beginner from zero to a working understanding of meditation and the foundations of a daily personal practice.

This course is open to anyone curious about meditation, with no prior experience or prerequisites required. It is geared specifically toward beginners — including people working through anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, or ADHD who want more control over their mental and emotional lives, as well as those seeking better focus, healthier relationships, or a deeper sense of presence in daily life.

The curriculum is organized into four lesson sections covering 23 topics. The Introduction defines what meditation is, why people practice it, and asks students to write a personal intention statement before beginning. The Meditation Exercises section is the core of the course, walking through four guided practices: Mindfulness of Breathing, Breathwork and Pranayama, Inhabiting the Body, and Broad Mindfulness. Each exercise is followed by a debrief and a reflection on what the student experienced, with a warning about how powerful breathwork can be as a practice.

The Integrating Meditation Into Your Life section covers how to extend sittings into longer meditation periods, how to build a daily practice, and the role of Sangha — community — in supporting it. The course closes with bonus modules of additional resources. Students complete a final assignment reviewing all four techniques to consolidate the material before finishing.

The course is taught by Kevin Ellerton, founder of Meditation Magazine and Meditation University and director of the school’s Meditation Teacher Training program. Kevin has been working to bring meditation to a wider audience since 2007, and his projects include the Spirit Quest documentary series and Meditation Magazine alongside his teaching work.

The format is fully self-paced. All four lessons and 23 topics are pre-recorded and accessible on demand once enrolled, with no live sessions or scheduled cohorts. Students can move through the roughly ninety minutes of material in one sitting or spread it across multiple sessions, completing the two written assignments — a personal intention statement and a review of all four techniques — at their own pace.
