My Vinyasa Practice: Chair Yoga Certification

Course program

The Chair Yoga Certification by My Vinyasa Practice is a 40-hour continuing education program that prepares yoga teachers and wellness professionals to make yoga accessible, safe, and supportive for every body. Anchored in trauma-informed teaching and anatomy-based movement, it focuses on adapting traditional postures using a chair as the primary prop.

This certification is designed for existing Yoga Alliance RYT-200 teachers, wellness professionals, and caregivers who want to expand their offerings to underserved populations. It serves teachers preparing to work with seniors, students with chronic conditions or limited mobility, and those navigating injury, illness, or recovery. The 40 CEUs apply to teachers already credentialed at RYT-200 level.

The curriculum covers the foundations of Chair Yoga and a three-perspectives framework for adapting traditional asana to seated and chair-supported practice. Students study anatomy basics and learn how to modify traditional poses without losing their purpose, with attention to stability and joint safety. The training also includes creative prop integration, safety and risk management, and verbal cueing strategies for inclusive teaching across diverse student populations.

Beyond the physical practice, the program covers nervous system regulation, breathwork, and gentle movement sequences that promote strength, flexibility, and relaxation. Strength-building practices appropriate for chair-supported students are addressed alongside the practical considerations of sequencing for limited mobility. The training is grounded in trauma-informed teaching principles, preparing graduates to work confidently with seniors, individuals in recovery, and students with chronic conditions, injuries, or other accessibility needs.

The program is led by Michelle Young, a certified Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT) specializing in Cardiac, Cancer, Eating Recovery, and Behavioral Health. Michelle is supported by Tara Cleven (E-RYT 500, C-IAYT) and Maire McGlasson (E-RYT 500). My Vinyasa Practice is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School and has served a community of over 60,000 international students.

The format is hybrid: pre-recorded video lectures and self-paced course materials are combined with live lectures and weekly live calls during business hours for support and Q&A. The training includes ebooks, one-on-one support, mentorship, and a practice teaching component. The minimum time to complete is ten weeks, and students retain lifetime access to all course materials.

This program helped me reconnect with the heart of yoga. The integration of philosophy, functional movement, and breathwork created a learning experience that felt both personal and transformative. I've grown not only as a teacher but also as a practitioner.
