Online Yoga School: Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Certification Online

Course program

The 25-Hour Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Certification Online by Online Yoga School is a Yoga Alliance YACEP continuing education program centered on the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series. It is taught by Rocio Varela, a RYT-200 instructor trained in the Ashtanga lineage of David C. Kyle and David Swenson.

This program suits practitioners who want to learn the structure of the Ashtanga Primary Series and teach it safely to a range of bodies. It is well aligned with yoga teachers seeking continuing education hours, but the school does not list prerequisite credentials, so anyone curious about Ashtanga can enroll and study the Primary Series at their own pace.

The curriculum opens with the history of Ashtanga and the foundations of the practice, then journeys through the four building blocks of the Primary Series: Sun Salutations, the Standing Sequence, the Seated Sequence, and the Finishing Sequence. Each section includes modifications so the postures can be offered to a wide range of bodies.

Alongside the sequencing material, the course includes pose breakdown tutorials and yoga pose tutorials, giving close-up technical guidance on individual postures. A movement and practice tutorial video library taught by Rocio supports independent study, and a downloadable Primary Series manual reinforces the on-screen learning. Students are also welcomed into the school’s international community of yoga teachers and trainees, where they can connect with peers and trainers around the practice.

The lead trainer is Rocio Varela, RYT-200. She began Ashtanga in 2012 as a dedicated student of David C. Kyle at AshtangaYoga Puerto Rico and completed a 40-hour Ashtanga intensive with David Swenson in 2016. She also holds a 200-hour Hatha and Vinyasa teacher training, a Restorative Yoga certification, and a Certified Holistic Health Nutritionist credential earned in 2020.

The course is delivered entirely online and self-paced through Online Yoga School’s Thinkific-hosted platform. Students work through the video lessons, pose tutorials, and Primary Series manual on their own schedule, with access to the school’s international community for questions and connection. No live sessions are required, and there is no fixed start or end date.
