Oxygen Advantage: Advanced Instructor Training

Course program

The Advanced Instructor Training by Oxygen Advantage is a flagship certification program in functional and performance breathing, designed by Patrick McKeown. Built around the three pillars of Body, Mind, and Sport, it covers the full Oxygen Advantage method and prepares graduates to integrate advanced breathing techniques into clinical, coaching, and athletic settings.

This training is open to professionals working with health, wellness, fitness, sport performance, or therapeutic practice — including coaches, therapists, healthcare workers, and corporate wellness providers. It also suits individuals who want to deepen their own breathing practice across body, mind, and sport without intending to teach. No prior credential is explicitly required to enrol.

The curriculum is delivered across 36 structured modules covering functional breathing and advanced performance protocols. Level 1 focuses on the three core dimensions of functional breathing: biochemical, biomechanical, and psychophysiological. You’ll learn to assess dysfunctional breathing patterns, understand CO2 tolerance and respiratory mechanics, and apply corrective techniques that influence sleep, focus, posture, and recovery.

Level 2 trains breath as a tool for mental and physical performance. You’ll apply breath-hold protocols and reduced breathing techniques to build resilience, sharpen focus, and support athletic capacity under pressure, including high-altitude simulation. Additional content covers client assessment tools, step-by-step instructions, customisable presentations, and specialist material for fitness, corporate performance, and sport contexts. Each module is supported by training videos, module-level assessments, and references to peer-reviewed research.

The program is led by Patrick McKeown, founder of Oxygen Advantage and a TEDx speaker with over 20 years of experience in breathing science. He is a bestselling author and was trained directly by Dr Konstantin Buteyko. Patrick delivers the seven live online sessions personally and is the lead voice across the recorded modules.

The format is hybrid: 100+ hours of self-paced video modules delivered through the Oxygen Advantage eLearning portal, combined with seven live two-hour Zoom sessions with Patrick McKeown for each cohort. All live sessions are recorded and added to the portal. Students receive lifetime access to course materials, refresher classes, and ongoing specialist content. Certification requires scoring at least 80% on module assessments and submitting three case studies reviewed by the Oxygen Advantage team.
