Oxygen Advantage: Breathing for Anxiety and Panic Disorder

Course program

Breathing for Anxiety and Panic Disorder by Oxygen Advantage is a self-paced online course built around the Oxygen Advantage method developed by Patrick McKeown. It teaches functional breathing as a practical, drug-free tool for easing anxiety, racing thoughts, and panic symptoms, and for shifting the body out of fight-or-flight into a calmer, more balanced state.

The course is open to anyone — no prior experience with breathwork is required. It is designed for adults dealing with frequent worry, racing thoughts, difficulty relaxing, trouble sleeping, irritability, or nervous energy, including high-functioning individuals who experience anxiety. It is not a professional or instructor certification — students who want to teach the method should look at the separate Oxygen Advantage instructor trainings.

The curriculum is organised around the three dimensions of functional breathing that sit at the core of the Oxygen Advantage method: biochemistry, or the body’s tolerance to carbon dioxide; biomechanics, or whether breathing happens from the diaphragm or the upper chest; and cadence, slowing the respiratory rate to between 4.5 and 6.5 breaths per minute.

From this foundation, students work through 40 step-by-step video lessons that apply the techniques to anxiety, racing thoughts, and panic. The course covers how everyday breathing patterns affect sleep, why anxiety can make mindfulness difficult and how to access mental calm anyway, the connection between hormonal fluctuations and cyclical anxiety experienced as PMS, and concrete techniques to stop a panic attack in its tracks. Self-help strategies for deepening understanding of the mind and building emotional resilience are integrated throughout. A downloadable PDF of Patrick’s book Anxiety-Free, Naturally accompanies the videos as a practical reference.

The course is led by Patrick McKeown, founder of Oxygen Advantage and a Buteyko-trained breathing educator with more than twenty years of experience. He is the author of ten books, including The Oxygen Advantage, a TEDx speaker, and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Biology. Patrick has worked with thousands of students on breathing, sleep, and anxiety since 2002.

The format is fully self-paced and online. After enrolling, students receive immediate access to the Oxygen Advantage eLearning portal and work through 40 pre-recorded instructional videos at their own speed. Lifetime access is included, along with a downloadable PDF of Patrick’s book Anxiety-Free, Naturally. There are no required live sessions, scheduled cohorts, or assignments — the structure is a daily breathing practice that students follow at home.
