Oxygen Advantage: Breathing for Snoring, Insomnia and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Course program

Breathing for Snoring, Insomnia and Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a self-paced online course from Oxygen Advantage, the functional breathing school founded by Patrick McKeown. It applies the three Oxygen Advantage dimensions of breathing — biochemistry, biomechanics, and cadence — to help students retrain their breathing patterns for deeper, more restorative sleep and reduced sleep-disordered breathing.

This course is open to anyone — no prior breathwork experience is needed. It is built for people who snore, struggle with insomnia, wake up unrefreshed, or suspect they may have mild sleep-disordered breathing. It also suits people seeking a natural way to improve sleep quality before reaching for medication or devices, including those exploring breath retraining as a complement to a sleep study.

The curriculum is organized into ten modules. Module 1 introduces the link between daytime breathing patterns and sleep, using the control pause as a feedback marker. Modules 2 through 5 work through breathing for sleep, nose-only breathing during sleep, light breathing for sleep quality, and breathing nose, slow, and low during sleep. Module 6 covers breathing during walking as a daytime practice that carries over into sleep.

Module 7 connects breathing with sleep and mental health, while Module 8 delivers a structured breathing program specifically for snoring, insomnia, and obstructive sleep apnea. Module 9 explains how to approach a sleep study, and Module 10 provides guided breathing audios for sleep. Students also study the three Oxygen Advantage dimensions — sensitivity to carbon dioxide, diaphragmatic versus upper-chest breathing, and coherent breathing at 4.5 to 6.5 breaths per minute — and learn how sleep position influences airway obstruction.

The course is led by Patrick McKeown, founder of Oxygen Advantage and the lead instructor for the school’s online breathing programs. He trained clinically under Professor Konstantin Buteyko and has spent more than two decades working with people on breathing, sleep, and anxiety. He is the author of ten books, including The Oxygen Advantage, a TEDx speaker, and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Biology.

The format is fully self-paced. All content is delivered through Oxygen Advantage’s online eLearning portal as guided video presentations from Patrick McKeown, downloadable materials, and supporting videos demonstrating each breathing exercise. Students start anytime and progress through the ten modules at their own pace. Access is lifetime, so the material can be revisited as sleep habits change. There are no required live sessions, assignments, or assessments.
