Oxygen Advantage: Online Breathing Course With Patrick McKeown

Course program

The Online Breathing Course With Patrick McKeown is Oxygen Advantage’s introductory breathwork program, built around the method Patrick developed after two decades of clinical work rooted in the Buteyko tradition. The program teaches functional breathing — light, slow, and deep — as a practical tool for better sleep, calmer nerves, and stronger physical performance.

The course is designed for anyone new to breathwork, including readers of Patrick’s book The Oxygen Advantage who want to move from reading about the techniques to practicing them with guidance. No prior experience or credential is required. It is not for those seeking professional certification or instructor training.

The curriculum is organised in three parts. Part one is a practical demonstration of the core breathing exercises, led on video by Patrick. Part two explains how each exercise works, including the BOLT score as a baseline measure of breathing function, nose unblocking techniques, and protocols for improving oxygen delivery. Part three covers the underlying science — the role of nasal nitric oxide, the biochemistry of carbon dioxide tolerance, the biomechanics of diaphragmatic breathing, and cadence or coherent breathing for the nervous system.

Along the way students learn to apply the techniques to everyday concerns: calming anxiety and stress responses, improving sleep quality, easing asthma symptoms, and simulating high-altitude training for athletic performance. The emphasis throughout is on nasal breathing, breath-light practice, and building a personal baseline rather than chasing intensity.

The course is led by Patrick McKeown, founder of Oxygen Advantage and a clinical trainee of Professor Konstantin Buteyko. Patrick is the author of ten books on breathing — including The Oxygen Advantage, published in over a dozen languages — a TEDx speaker, and a Fellow of The Royal Society of Biology. He has worked with thousands of students on breathing, sleep, and anxiety since 2002.

The format is fully self-paced and online. Students receive login details immediately after purchase and work through approximately two hours of video lessons plus one 30-minute class with Patrick. Access is lifetime, so the material can be revisited as the practice develops. There are no required live sessions, assignments, or quizzes.
