Primal Health Coach Institute: Applied Ketogenic Diet Specialist Certification

Course program

The Applied Ketogenic Diet Specialist Certification by Primal Health Coach Institute is a self-paced online program that teaches the science and practical application of the ketogenic diet. Developed by keto researcher and nutritionist Chris Irvin, the course prepares coaches to personalize keto for individual client goals rather than treating it as a one-size-fits-all approach.

This program is designed for holistic health coaches, nutritionists, personal trainers, and healthcare providers who want to add keto specialization to their practice. It is open to both certified and aspiring coaches, with no prerequisites to enroll.

The curriculum is organized into eight written chapters, each structured around an overview, learning objectives, quick facts, key terms, core learnings, and a summary. Chapter 1 introduces ketosis and its benefits, covering the metabolic state of ketosis and how it differs from using carbohydrates for energy. Chapter 2 addresses food quality and nutrient density, including what to eat, what to avoid, and how to navigate “keto-approved” products and budget constraints. Chapter 3 covers inducing natural ketosis and managing the keto flu.

Chapter 4 focuses on personalizing keto for clients, including different keto variations, gender-specific considerations, and methods for handling hunger and satisfaction. Chapter 5 addresses tracking health metrics and progress, combining objective measurements with subjective experience. Chapter 6 covers managing, maintaining, and troubleshooting ketosis, including when strategies like “dirty keto” and cheat meals may be beneficial. Chapter 7 covers keto-specific supplements, and Chapter 8 addresses lifestyle factors including exercise, sleep, and stress management.

Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on the ability to build customized keto plans, support clients through adaptation, monitor metabolic health, and sustain long-term success.

The course was developed by Chris Irvin, MS, a keto researcher and nutritionist with a master’s degree from the University of Tampa, author of the bestselling book Keto Answers, and President of Product at BioCoach. Mark Sisson, co-founder of Primal Health Coach Institute and a leading figure in the ancestral health community, serves as co-founder and instructor.

The course is fully self-paced and delivered online. After enrollment, students receive login credentials to a password-protected portal with immediate access to all eight written chapters, downloadable client resources, and supplemental materials. Students enjoy lifetime access to the course and can study at their own speed. The school suggests budgeting approximately four to five hours per chapter, for around 30 hours of total study time.
