Primal Health Coach Institute: Strength Training for Women Specialist Certification

Course program

The Strength Training for Women Specialist Certification by Primal Health Coach Institute is a self-paced online program for coaches who want to guide female clients toward meaningful strength and muscle development. It blends applied fitness science with coaching practice, addressing the physiological, hormonal, behavioral, and cultural factors that shape how women train.

The course is for people who coach women in some capacity, or want to, including established fitness coaches looking to add a specialization and newcomers seeking a focused entry point into women-centered strength coaching.

The curriculum is organized into six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the key concepts behind female-specific strength training. Chapter 2 covers nutrition and hydration, including macro and calorie needs, meal planning, and why many women under-consume protein. Chapter 3 details core training principles, program design, and common concerns such as cardio requirements and the myth of bulking. Chapter 4 focuses on recovery and stress management. Chapter 5 explores the hormonal, skeletal, and muscular differences of female physiology, including training and nutrition applications across pregnancy and menopause. Chapter 6 examines fitness culture, marketing misinformation, and the importance of coaching women and men differently.

Every chapter includes a Coaching Your Clients section that translates the educational material into practice, plus a practicum assignment. The program also supplies a four-week strength-training template that can be adapted to beginner and intermediate clients, and a Scope of Practice section with guidance on legal responsibilities for fitness coaches.

The course is led by Ashleigh VanHouten, a health coach and author with certifications in nutrition, applied women’s physiology, and strength training. She hosts the Muscle Science for Women podcast, has a background in swimming, powerlifting, and CrossFit, and is a former nationally ranked natural figure competitor.

The format is fully self-paced. Students receive login credentials to a password-protected portal and work through six chapters of written content supported by video and audio supplements for different learning styles. Lifetime access means students can revisit the material at any time. A private Primal Health Coach Institute Facebook community provides ongoing peer and faculty support.
