Santosha Yoga Institute: Online Pre + Post Natal Yoga Training

Course program

The Online Pre + Post Natal Yoga Teacher Training is a 50-hour self-paced specialisation from Santosha Yoga Institute. It teaches yoga teachers and committed practitioners how to safely guide pregnant women and new mothers through asana, breath, and relaxation practices tailored to each trimester and the postpartum period.

The training is open to anyone wanting to deepen their understanding of pregnancy yoga, whether or not they teach. Registered Yoga Teachers (RYT-200 or RYT-500) can use it to add a specialised skill to their toolkit and earn 50 continuing-education hours. Non-teachers can take it as personal study to support themselves or others through pregnancy and motherhood.

The curriculum spans four modules. Module 1 covers safe yoga, exercise, and breathing practices across pregnancy and postpartum. Module 2 focuses on teaching gentle poses, breathing techniques, vocal toning, and deep relaxation to prepare mothers for labour. Module 3 builds skills to empower women through birth and beyond, and Module 4 covers teaching new mums.

Specific topics include the intentions and benefits of prenatal yoga, guidelines for practice on the mat, important adaptations for asana postures, teaching principles and core safety guidelines, breath awareness and bhavana, a journey through the trimesters, hormonal changes during pregnancy, prenatal asana exercises, management of common physical ailments, the three vital tonings of prenatal yoga, pelvic floor and core muscle work, belly and abdominal separation, pranayama, labour and childbirth, meditation and visualisations, sample prenatal and postpartum sequencing, yoga during active birth for pain reduction, legalities and safety, postpartum body recovery, and sequencing for postpartum yoga.

The Pre and Postpartum sections are led by Sunny Richards, founder of Santosha Yoga Institute, who has taught for over 22 years across Vinyasa, Vini Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Pre and Post Natal Yoga, Yoga Nidra, and several other modalities. The Anatomy and the Body component is taught by Andrea Abian, a Yoga Therapist and Physiotherapist with over 13 years of clinical experience, who studied Yoga Therapy in India with Ganesh Mohan.

The course is delivered fully online and is completely self-paced. Students work through video lectures and module materials at their own speed, and the school says the program can be completed in five intensive days or stretched out for those studying part-time. Live online mentoring and support are available throughout, and students can connect with other yoga teachers around the world via the platform.

I held my workshop on Saturday afternoon. It was a practice run through with my husband to see how the format went and how I went! I absolutely loved it, and so did my husband. Overall, doing the practice run through was great as I now feel confident to advertise and run the workshop for a small group of people! Thank you so much for sharing all of your experience, knowledge and wisdom. I would never have had the confidence or the knowledge to pursue this without you.

The online material was so thorough and informative that I never felt I was lost or missing something. Learning via online was easy with Santosha because their online platform was well organized. It took the doubt of online learning completely away. The teachers were also amazing! My experience of training with Santosha gave me a whole different understanding of yoga. The mental, spiritual, meditative side of yoga was so beneficial to my life and especially in these crazy times we are in currently.

I never thought I could feel such a strong sense of community, love and passion through my laptop! The courses are well organized and very complete. I have learned so much. The challenging part for me was to deconstruct what I had learned in my own yoga practice, in order to teach in a safe way for my future students. My life has been turned upside down with the COVID crisis. This training not only gave me new future perspectives, it also helped me go through a difficult time and listen to myself. I can only recommend!

I'm so grateful that this opportunity came up and I was able to learn from the most wonderful and knowledgeable instructors from around the world. There is so much to learn and I have been fully supported both during the course and ongoing. I've come away with such amazement at what I learnt as yoga is really so much more than I thought. I'm so happy to have found answers and I want to share my love for yoga with all.
