Soma Yoga Institute: 200 Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training Certification Program

Course program

The 200-Hour Online Yoga Teacher Training Certification Program from Soma Yoga Institute is a Yoga Alliance-accredited training that blends alignment-based Hatha and Vinyasa yoga with a therapeutic, biomechanically informed approach. Delivered as a hybrid program of pre-recorded lessons and weekly live sessions, it prepares graduates to teach yoga that stays safe and sustainable for a lifetime of practice.

This training is for students at any level, including aspiring yoga teachers, current practitioners seeking a deeper understanding of yoga and anatomy, and existing teachers wanting to add a therapeutic and adaptive foundation to their work. No prior credentials or physical proficiency are required.

The curriculum covers asana techniques across every major category, including standing poses, hip openers, forward bends, twists, backbends, inversions, and supine work, with biomechanically sound alignment and full adaptations for injuries and different bodies. Students also study Vinyasa flow sequencing, Yin yoga, and restorative yoga.

Beyond physical practice, the program covers pranayama and meditation, experiential anatomy and fascia, the art of teaching — including intentional sequencing and adapting for special populations — and yoga philosophy through Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, yoga history, and mythology. Additional modules address yoga as holistic health and healing, the Pancha Maya Kosha model, chakra studies, applied Ayurveda, current research on yoga, and the business of yoga.

The program is led by a faculty of Certified Yoga Therapists (C-IAYT) and E-RYT 500 master teachers, including founder and director Liz Heffernan, alongside Peggy Profant, Samantha Akers, Cathryn Wilson, and Molly Masaoka. The faculty brings over 20 years of teaching experience each, with backgrounds spanning therapeutic yoga, alignment-based practice, and yoga therapy.

The format is hybrid. Pre-recorded video lessons make up roughly 120 hours of content, supported by weekly live Zoom sessions on Wednesday afternoons and bi-weekly Saturday sessions, all recorded for asynchronous access. Students also receive six one-to-one Zoom or phone mentorship sessions. The program can be completed on flexible timelines ranging from 12 weeks to 8 months.

I absolutely love the vibe of working one on one and everything learned in this module made it easy for me to put together sequences for my private client volunteer (who's still coming back for more). The benefit of working one on one is you really get to see results. Every time we meet we check in first and I'm just thrilled with the positive feedback from someone who really needed some positivity in her life.

Peggy is a superb excellent teacher. Not only is she highly knowledgable and experienced in teaching and training others, she delivers material very well, easy to follow, and uses training tools such as slides and handouts which promotes the efficacy of her teaching. She is pleasant and gladly responds to questions with clarity and completeness. She is a great asset to the SOMA institute. I much love and enjoy her practices.
