Soma Yoga Institute: Kids Yoga Teacher Training

Course program

The Kids Yoga Teacher Training is offered by Soma Yoga Institute in partnership with Om Shree Om, the first children’s yoga school to be registered with Yoga Alliance USA. The program prepares graduates to teach yoga to children with a therapeutic, developmental, and trauma-informed approach grounded in the lineage of founder Christine McArdle.

This training is open to anyone interested in teaching yoga to children, with no prior certification required. The school welcomes mothers and fathers, grandparents, aunts and uncles, educators, counselors, health care professionals including psychologists and pediatricians, and existing yoga teachers wanting to add a children’s specialization.

The curriculum is organized into ten modules. Students begin with Serving Children of the 21st Century and move into Trauma, PTSD, and Yoga’s Therapeutic Benefits, followed by a Developmental Approach to Creating Classes and Themes. Later modules cover Emotional Intelligence, Creating Limits, and Creative Play; Spirituality, Chakras for Kids and Breathing and Meditating; two modules on Asana and Alignment including Pose Study with Kids and Addressing Misalignments; Living in Harmony with Nature and Aromatherapy; and Bringing Yoga into Schools, Communities, and Homes. The training closes with a Practicum module called Sharing Your Love. Throughout, students study age-appropriate sequencing, theme-based class creation, pranayama, meditation, mudras, and functional movement for children.

The program is led by Christine McArdle, E-RYT 500, who founded Om Shree Om in 2004 and has trained hundreds of children’s yoga teachers across three continents. She blends Iyengar, Kripalu, and Anusara yoga with Montessori and Waldorf educational traditions. She is the author of Om Shree Om: Mind, Body, and Spirit of Teaching Yoga to Children.

The format is hybrid. Ten modules of prerecorded video lessons with handouts and sample practices are paired with six live Zoom calls on Saturdays from 8:00am to 10:00am Pacific, also available as recordings. The program runs over ten weeks at roughly nine to ten hours per week, with students given up to five months to complete and lifetime access to the material.

I absolutely love the vibe of working one on one and everything learned in this module made it easy for me to put together sequences for my private client volunteer (who's still coming back for more). The benefit of working one on one is you really get to see results. Every time we meet we check in first and I'm just thrilled with the positive feedback from someone who really needed some positivity in her life.

Peggy is a superb excellent teacher. Not only is she highly knowledgable and experienced in teaching and training others, she delivers material very well, easy to follow, and uses training tools such as slides and handouts which promotes the efficacy of her teaching. She is pleasant and gladly responds to questions with clarity and completeness. She is a great asset to the SOMA institute. I much love and enjoy her practices.
