Soma Yoga Institute: Understanding Trauma & Resilience

Course program

Understanding Trauma & Resilience is a 15-hour self-paced continuing education training from Soma Yoga Institute, taught by trauma-informed yoga therapist Alison Scola, C-IAYT. The course explores what trauma is, how it lives in the body and nervous system, and how skillfully sequenced yoga practices can support healing. Students earn 15 hours of Yoga Alliance continuing education credit with lifetime access to the material.

This training is built for yoga teachers who want to bring a trauma-informed lens to their classes, and for committed students curious about how yoga supports healing from stress and trauma. It will resonate with teachers working with anxious, stressed, or trauma-affected populations, as well as practitioners exploring the link between nervous system regulation and on-the-mat experience. No specific credential is required to enroll.

The curriculum covers the physiology of trauma and its effects on the body. You’ll explore the autonomic nervous system, common contraction patterns associated with the stress response, the role of the vagus nerve, and yoga tools for reclaiming healthy vagal tone. The course addresses the role and presence of a trauma-informed teacher, including how to create a safe container for healing through language, sequencing, and room set-up. You will learn to apply pranayama, integrated gentle movement practices, and sacred sound to guide students toward nervous system regulation, build a tool kit for teaching trauma-sensitive populations, and experience practices that balance and regulate your own system.

Alison Scola, C-IAYT, E-RYT 500, LMT, is a trauma-informed yoga therapist who came to yoga in 1993 through chronic pain. She has trained at White Lotus Foundation, Integrative Yoga Therapy, Yogalign at Kauai Yoga School, Healing Hands Schools of Holistic Health, The Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, and the Upledger Institute. She is also a Licensed Massage Therapist, Reiki Master, Experienced Yoga Teacher Trainer, and Level 1 Equine Somatic Movement Educator.

The training is delivered online and self-paced. You sign up once and start anytime, working through the material at your own rhythm from home. Lifetime access means you can return to the lessons whenever you need a refresher. The course is open to both yoga teachers and interested students, with no live sessions required to complete.

I absolutely love the vibe of working one on one and everything learned in this module made it easy for me to put together sequences for my private client volunteer (who's still coming back for more). The benefit of working one on one is you really get to see results. Every time we meet we check in first and I'm just thrilled with the positive feedback from someone who really needed some positivity in her life.

Peggy is a superb excellent teacher. Not only is she highly knowledgable and experienced in teaching and training others, she delivers material very well, easy to follow, and uses training tools such as slides and handouts which promotes the efficacy of her teaching. She is pleasant and gladly responds to questions with clarity and completeness. She is a great asset to the SOMA institute. I much love and enjoy her practices.
