Soma Yoga Institute: Yoga for the Private Client

Course program

Yoga for the Private Client is a 20-hour continuing education program from Soma Yoga Institute, led by C-IAYT Yoga Therapist Peggy Profant. It prepares working yoga teachers to step into one-on-one work with clients, combining therapeutic assessment, subtle-body understanding, and practical session design. The course earns 20 Yoga Alliance CE hours and is delivered fully self-paced.

This course is designed for existing yoga teachers who want to expand from group classes into private one-on-one work. No formal prerequisite is stated beyond active teaching experience. It’s a fit for teachers ready to meet students where they are, address physical, energetic, mental, and emotional needs in individual sessions, and add a well-compensated offering to their practice.

The curriculum teaches how to structure a private yoga session and a series of sessions, and how to identify a client’s needs through the lens of posture, Ayurveda, the chakras, and the five Vayus. Teachers learn intake and assessment tools that work across the five koshas, along with the creation of practical intake forms.

A significant portion of the course focuses on working with strong emotions, anxiety, and depression using yogic tools, listening skills for creating safety, and pranayama practices to balance the subtle body. Students also study how to assess breath and identify blockages in prana, and how to use case studies of real clients to inform session design.

The course covers the scope of practice for a yoga teacher versus a yoga therapist and how to work ethically. It closes with practical marketing guidance for finding and retaining private clients.

The course is led by Peggy Profant, a C-IAYT Certified Yoga Therapist and E-RYT 500 with over 25 years of teaching experience. She has been leading Yoga Teacher Trainings since 2008, previously owned and operated Om Shala Yoga studio in Arcata for 10 years, and founded the retreat business World Family Yoga. Her private-client work focuses on therapeutic transformation through yoga.

The format is fully self-paced. Students start any time and progress at their own pace through pre-recorded instructional videos. The program is delivered online with no required live sessions, allowing teachers to integrate the training around an existing schedule. Materials are designed to be returned to as a working reference for ongoing private-client practice.

I absolutely love the vibe of working one on one and everything learned in this module made it easy for me to put together sequences for my private client volunteer (who's still coming back for more). The benefit of working one on one is you really get to see results. Every time we meet we check in first and I'm just thrilled with the positive feedback from someone who really needed some positivity in her life.

Peggy is a superb excellent teacher. Not only is she highly knowledgable and experienced in teaching and training others, she delivers material very well, easy to follow, and uses training tools such as slides and handouts which promotes the efficacy of her teaching. She is pleasant and gladly responds to questions with clarity and completeness. She is a great asset to the SOMA institute. I much love and enjoy her practices.
