Sounds True: Body and Mind Are One

Course program

Body and Mind Are One by Sounds True is an online mindfulness training led by Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh, presented as four-camera HD video sessions recorded during a six-day retreat in Estes Park, Colorado. The course introduces the foundational teachings of mindfulness practice in the Plum Village tradition.

The training is open to anyone drawn to mindfulness and Buddhist practice, with no prior experience or credentials required. It suits both newcomers seeking a structured introduction to mindful living and existing meditators who want to study directly with one of the most influential teachers in the contemporary Buddhist world. There are no prerequisites.

Across eight weeks, students study Buddha’s seven exercises for using the breath mindfully and learn how to bring conscious attention to body, feelings, mind, and the objects of mind. The curriculum walks through the Five Mindfulness Trainings as ethical foundations for daily life, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Four Noble Truths.

Further teachings explore emptiness, interbeing, and impermanence as ways of understanding the interconnected nature of reality. Sessions on cultivating compassion and lovingkindness translate these insights into relational and emotional practice. Each week includes recommended exercises supported by a practice tracker, allowing students to integrate the material into ordinary moments of breathing, walking, eating, and listening rather than treating mindfulness as a separate activity.

The course is taught by Thich Nhat Hanh (1926–2022), a Zen master in the Vietnamese tradition, scholar, poet, and peace activist. He founded the Van Hanh Buddhist University in Saigon and taught at Columbia University and the Sorbonne. He authored more than sixty books, including the bestseller Living Buddha, Living Christ, and was nominated for the 1967 Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr.

The format is fully self-paced. Students receive seven hours of four-camera HD video sessions, structured across an eight-week arc, and can begin at any time. Videos are downloadable for repeated viewing, and each week includes recommended practices supported by a practice tracker. Enrollment includes the Sounds True One membership with the first month free, then $19.99 per month, cancellable at any time.
