Sounds True: Mindfulness-based Mind Fitness Training

Course program

Mindfulness-based Mind Fitness Training, or MMFT, is a self-paced online course from Sounds True created by Dr. Elizabeth Stanley, a Georgetown University professor and U.S. Army veteran. The program is rooted in neuroscience, stress physiology research, and Somatic Experiencing. It introduces a trauma-sensitive approach to mindfulness designed to help people build resilience and recover from chronic stress and trauma.

This course is open to anyone navigating high-stress demands, burnout, or trauma recovery. No prior mindfulness experience or credentials are required. MMFT was originally developed for combat troops preparing to deploy, and the same tools support first responders, healthcare workers, helping professionals, veterans, and civilians whose daily lives put sustained pressure on their nervous system.

The training is grounded in research funded by the U.S. Department of Defense and tested across four studies with combat troops preparing to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan. Students learn how the brain and body respond to chronic stress and trauma, and they practice tools designed to widen the window of stress tolerance.

The curriculum focuses on three sets of outcomes documented in the research. First, improved cognitive performance — sustained attention, working memory, and fewer negative emotions. Second, better physiological self-regulation and resilience, with more effective stress responses during challenge, faster recovery afterwards, better-quality sleep, and improved biomarkers of immune functioning. Third, better regulation of negative emotions — greater pain tolerance, lower perceived stress, less emotional reactivity, and stronger impulse control.

The approach integrates mindfulness with Somatic Experiencing, the body-based trauma therapy in which Dr. Stanley is certified, giving the practices a distinctive trauma-sensitive frame.

The course is taught by Dr. Elizabeth Stanley, the creator of Mindfulness-based Mind Fitness Training. She is a Georgetown University professor, a U.S. Army veteran with service in Asia and Europe, and a certified practitioner of Somatic Experiencing. She holds degrees from Yale, Harvard, and MIT, and is the author of Widen the Window: Training Your Brain and Body to Thrive During Stress and Recover from Trauma.

The format is a self-paced online course delivered through the Sounds True platform. Students work through the material on their own schedule, with no live sessions required. Payment options include a single one-time payment or three monthly installments. Each course purchase includes a one-month free trial of the Sounds True One membership, after which the membership renews monthly until cancelled.
