Sounds True: The Healing Trauma Program

Course program

The Healing Trauma Program by Sounds True is a nine-month online immersion led by Dr. Jeffrey Rutstein, a clinical psychologist and Hakomi Mindfulness-Centered Somatic psychotherapist. It guides students through the territory of trauma with a focus on regulating the nervous system, embodying safety, and developing the compassionate presence needed to support healing in oneself and others.

The program is for all levels, including helping professionals and everyday practitioners such as therapists, coaches, educators, yoga teachers, massage therapists, parents, and leaders. No prior clinical credentials are required. It is suitable for anyone seeking practical tools for working with their own trauma responses or supporting others.

Students explore the nature of trauma across its many forms — personal, intergenerational, and collective — and learn how the nervous system shapes the body’s response to distress. The curriculum covers self-regulation techniques, pathways to internal safety, and how to recognize and work with personal triggers in real time.

The program emphasizes embodied practice alongside understanding: students develop tools to stay grounded during activation, cultivate compassionate awareness, and shift from reactivity toward presence. Teachings draw on somatic psychology, mindfulness, and meditation traditions that Dr. Rutstein has worked with for decades.

The program is led by Dr. Jeffrey Rutstein, PsyD, who has been in private practice for over 35 years and has practiced meditation for more than 50. He is a certified Hakomi Mindfulness-Centered Somatic psychotherapist with deep experience in trauma treatment, and he hosts monthly live office hours as part of the program.

The format is hybrid: over 30 hours of pre-recorded video and audio content combined with live virtual sessions and monthly office hours with Dr. Rutstein. Students move through the material at their own pace over nine months while participating in the scheduled group sessions. Enrollment includes a trial of the Sounds True One membership for additional practice resources.
