Yoga Farm Ithaca: Foundations of the Pose

Course program

Foundations of the Pose is a short online anatomy and sequencing course from Yoga Farm Ithaca, taught by movement specialist Zarra Leonard. It walks through a vinyasa yoga sequence from a biomechanics perspective, helping teachers and dedicated practitioners understand what is happening in the body during common poses and transitions.

This course is for yoga teachers and enthusiastic practitioners who want to deepen their understanding of the physical practice, especially those with some yoga experience and curiosity about body mechanics. It is particularly useful for currently registered yoga teachers needing continuing education hours. No prior anatomy background is required.

The curriculum reviews a full vinyasa yoga sequence through a scientific lens, breaking down the structure of the human body and how different poses load the joints, muscles, and fascia. Students learn safer sequencing principles and how to choose cues that respect each body’s mechanics.

The course also offers new teaching tools: fresh verbal cues, transitions between poses, and anatomy lessons that can be woven directly into class planning. The aim is practical rather than academic, so teachers leave with language and sequencing choices they can use in their next class.

The course is taught by Zarra Leonard, a movement specialist who earned her RYT-200 and RYT-500 through Yoga Farm Ithaca and holds a degree in Exercise Science from Ithaca College. Her teaching blends biomechanics with a yogic sensibility for the subtle body.

The format is fully self-paced. Students receive access after purchase through an email from Yoga Farm Ithaca and can move through the 10 lessons on their own schedule. Total content runs roughly three hours, so the course can be completed in a single focused afternoon or spread over several sittings.

Yoga Farm Ithaca is one of those rare places that feels deeply nourishing the moment you arrive and somehow continues to work on you long after you leave. In person, the land itself feels held and intentional. There is a sense of care woven into everything from the physical space to the pacing of the days to the people who gather there. The classes and offerings are thoughtful, embodied, and accessible without ever feeling watered down. Whether you are brand new to a practice or deeply experienced, you feel welcomed exactly as you are.
