Yoga with Kassandra: Yama & Niyama

Course program

Yama & Niyama by Yoga with Kassandra is a self-paced online course that takes students through the first two limbs of yoga as outlined in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Co-taught by Kassandra Reinhardt and Indian yoga educator Madhura Bhagwat, it combines philosophy lectures, yoga classes, and journaling work.

This course is open to everyone, with no prior experience required. It’s designed for students who love yoga and want to understand the philosophy behind the practice, as well as for yoga teachers looking to deepen their grounding in the first two limbs and bring yama and niyama into their own teaching.

The curriculum walks through all ten sub-limbs — the five yamas (restraints, or things not to do) and the five niyamas (observances, or things to do) — one at a time. Each sub-limb is explored through a philosophy lecture led by Madhura Bhagwat, a yoga class taught by Kassandra Reinhardt designed to embody the theme, and a set of journaling prompts.

Students are also given a 65-page training manual that accompanies the video content. The course treats yama and niyama as a practical moral code — a map for living the practice off the mat — rather than a purely theoretical framework. Topics include how each principle shows up in daily life, how to apply them in relationships and work, and how they tie into a broader yoga practice.

The course is co-taught by two teachers. Kassandra Reinhardt is an Ottawa-based yoga instructor known for her Yoga with Kassandra YouTube channel, where she has introduced yoga to a global audience. Madhura Bhagwat is an India-trained yoga educator with over 14 years of experience teaching yoga philosophy, Ayurveda, and mantra chanting within 200- and 300-hour teacher training programs.

The format is fully self-paced. There are no live sessions — students watch the pre-recorded philosophy lectures and yoga classes in their own time and work through the journaling prompts at their own pace. Enrolled students receive lifetime access to all course materials, including the downloadable training manual. Teacher and community support is available through the Teachable platform.

Such a great course! This training should be in all 200hr teacher trainings or at least the advanced 300hr or 500hr trainings. It really is such an in-depth course on how to embody the live the yogic teachings.

The course was fantastic, and provided me with a much deeper and more sacred introduction to the yamas and niyamas. The yoga classes beautifully paired with the particular yama/niyama and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to complete the course.

Thank you Kassandra and Madhura for this beautiful journey together discovering the first of the eight limbs. I studied these a long time ago when doing my teacher training but having the lecture and then a class plus journaling prompts really helped it sink in so much better this time.
